Yaya DeCosta assaulted by her husband? Was she a victim all along?
After four years of separation, on October 6, 2018, the news on why Yaya filed divorce hit the floor and cause a lot of stir in media. She claimed that Joshua Bee Alafia raped her in her sleep. She was silence on the reason back then, but she revealed herself as a survivor of sexual assault in an Instagram post by non other than her ex-husband.
As per DeCosta, they were living in a same house even after separating so as to enable them co-parent their son.
She claimed that one night during that period, Joshua sneaked into her bed in middle of the night and has sex with her as she slept. She also releveled that she remained quiet all this while because she thought no one would believe her story.
I didn’t tell anyone because I didn’t think anyone would believe me. We had been broken up and sleeping in separate rooms for months, but we were still sharing a roof, had created life together, were falsely perceived as a union… he wasn’t a stranger, it wasn’t at gun point, and because I woke up from my sleep in the middle of it and didn’t fight hard enough to stop him… because when I confronted him, he said he “thought it would be healing.” . FOR WHOM?! . How dare he. How dare they. Years have passed, but today was tough. We are entering dangerous territory, where patriarchal entitlement and a fear or women’s power, is driving these types of men to transfer physical dominion over women’s bodies from their dorm rooms to laws. I am so grateful for the invitation from Dr. Ford to examine past defeats, join hands with survivors and allies, and march into the future with deep healing, radical joy, and fierce determination.
