Who is Tom Llamas?

Born Thomas Edward Llamas on the 2nd July 1979. in Miami, Florida USA, he is a journalist, television host and anchorman, best known to the world fthrough his extensive work for the American Broadcasting Company (ABC). He can be seen as a weekend anchor of “World News Tonight”, and as a correspondent on “Good Morning America”, among other career achievements.

Of Cuban ancestry, Tom is the son of Cuban immigrants who escaped Cuba’s political revolution. Following his successful completion of high school education, Tom enrolled at Loyola University, from which he received a Bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism and Drama and Speech in 2001. His education didn’t end there, as he enrolled at the University of Miami’s Institute for Cu Cuban-American Studies, where he completed a program that focused on Raul Castro and Cuban-American voters.

Career Beginnings

After graduation, Tom landed a job at NBC News Specials Unit in New York. However, after a couple of months, he was recruited by MSNBC, where he remained for the next five years, during which time he covered political events, while also reporting on the Afghanistan War and the 9/11 attacks. Furthermore, he traveled across the US during the 2000 Presidential election, covering campaigns of the Democratic candidates, including Rev. Al Sharpton, Sen. John Kerry, and Sen. John Edwards. His next career move was accepting an offer from NBC to work for NBC 6 or WTVJ in Miami.

Rise to Prominence

He remained at WTVJ for the next four years, becoming a star journalist and winning a number of awards for his reports. He did a story on smuggling Cuban refugees into the US by boat called “Go Fast” in 2008, winning an Emmy Award for his efforts, and continued his rise to prominence by covering Pope Benedict XVI’s trip to the US. Also while at NBC 6, Tom reported on hurricanes including Hurricane Katrina, but after that, he left NBC 6 and joined New York-based WNBC and NBC News as a general assignment reporter, where he continued to focus on hurricanes, and as a result won an Emmy for his coverage of Hurricane Irene in 2013, the same year that he also bagged Emmy Awards for Best Anchor and Best Hard News Story. The following year, Tom was a part of the WNBC team that won two regional Edward R. Murrow awards, one for Hurricane Sandy coverage. Additionally while at WNBC, Tom also reported from Haiti on the devastating earthquake, and on the Boston Marathon bombings, among many other stories.

His hard work and dedication paid off in 2014 when he was recruited by ABC News, anchoring the weekend edition of “World News Tonight”, while also being made Chief National Correspondent for all ABC news shows. Since then, Tom has been seen as a substitute anchor for David Muir in “ABC World News Tonight with David Muir”, and has contributed to the show “This Week” as a correspondent. During the 2016 Presidential campaign, Tom covered Republican candidates, and had a controversial encounter with Donald Trump, when Tom asked the president about his philanthropic activities. As a response, Donald Trump called Tom a sleaze.
