Early Life and Career Beginnings
Emily is of mixed Polish, Jewish, German and Irish descent. Her mother, Kathleen Balgley was a professor, while her father, John David Ratajkowski, was an artist as well as an art teacher. Her parents were unmarried, and the family lived in West Kensington and Bloomsbury before moving to San Diego, California when Emily was five years old. They had a small house in Encinitas near the ocean.
She travelled to various areas of Europe when growing-up, and spent most of her summers in Ireland. She became very interested in acting as a child, and would often stage shows for her family. Her first formal role was in an adaptation of “The Little Match Girl”, but she also tried her hand in ballet as well as soccer.
